Treasure Hunt and Picnic Run to the Big Pit
30th July 2006

Once again the weather was good and clear, we met at Hurrans garden centre at 11am and after the shock of seeing the route we were supposed to take and listening to the instructions given to us by Wayne, we were soon on our way.

Leaving at minute intervals the route proved to be too much for some of us. One car headed straight for the big pit which was the finishing post, as he found it hard with no co-driver and this could be understood by the rest. Next to arrive was Wayne and showed some concern as he did the route without seeing any of the other cars along the way. A while later Phil and Lynda arrived and explained where they had got lost (a junction that was not a junction) and they had ended up in a pub in Usk. Soon the others arrived, each had a different story to tell. One clue read, "what was the number on the racing dog's coat"? Well, there was no coat on the dog - it must have been the hot weather we have been having. In truth the dog had been repainted since the run had been organised. The winner of the 8 cars that took part was Mike Stokes and in the picture you can see him being given a prize of a bottle of wine by Phil. He got 11 clues correct.

Big Pit mine turned out to be quite windy so the picnics were soon over but not before we had all tried the MG biscuits made by young Emily and tasty they were too. A stroll was called for, so we walked up to the mine gallery and watched a short film about mining. This was quite educational and has improved over the years so if you did not go on the run then you still have a chance to go to the Big Pit for a good day out. The run itself was 49.9 Miles long and a big thank you to Wayne for organising it.
